Ultraviolet (UV) lights that effectively kill germs - Germicidal Irradiation(UVGI) light is utilized widely to kill coronavirus. UVGI lights are used by hospitals as a disinfection device to assist in cleaning coronvirus patient rooms, for example. Robots or remote controled UVGI lamps are commonly used by moving them into closed rooms then operated for 5-20 minutes to perform effective disinfection.
But are they doing an adequate job?--can these UVGI light devices be improved, in order to be more effective? Or more powerful? Or safer for people?
The Mahoney brand devices below provide new designs that improve upon existing technology--by providing more power, or more safety, or ease of use, or increased capability in operation.
Improper use or exposure to UVGI lamps can results in eye injury and skin injury. As an example, this National Institute of Health (NIH) report shows that an improper lamp installation in a hospital resulted in workers getting injured, and later recovered. Link to report, "Occupational risk from ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) lamps."
The UVGI lamp in the study above, is the commonly used lamp operating at 254 nanometers wavelength. These common UVGI lamps are unsafe to operate when people have skin and eyes exposed to their light. This makes operation difficult and costly.
An alternative to 254 nm UVGI lamps are 222 nm lamps that, recent studies show, are safe for skin and eyes. And, laboratory studies show that these lamps are safe to operate with people in the room and exposed. However, the FDA has yet to provide the safe criteria for them. See study, "Monochromatic 222 nm UV light: Development of a safe, cost-effective technology for the efficient reduction of bacterial and viral infection and transmission." The Mahoney brand lamps are provided in an enclosure with an opening for viewing and operation. These products are offered for experimental use and are not recommended for any specific purpose. Though, competitors do recommend them for use in airports and other locations.
Mahoney 222 nm lamps are available to purchasers for testing, use, OEM, and more. Contact us for information or purchase from our store online.
Mahoney 222nm lamps can be inserted into air conditioners to deactivate micro-organisms. Air conditioners can contribute to airborne transmission. See Coronavirus Prompts Response in HVAC Industry Coronavirus Prompts Response in HVAC Industry.
